Wabi-Sabi

The theme for this month was Wabi-Sabi. “This is the Japanese art of imperfect beauty. Accepting the natural cycle of growth and decay in which everything has beauty”

Last Light of the Day

“There is a sunrise and sunset every day. You can choose to be there for it. You can put yourself in the way of beauty.” – Cheryl Strayed

There is something so magical about the light at the end of the day. It is visually beautiful with the array of colors and the warm glow, and it is the time of the day most people are winding down from the day and spending time with family. We took pictures this month some using the last light of the day some during sunset, some after the sun has dipped below the horizon, and all just as beautiful as the next.

Beauty in Dirt

“and at the end of the day your feet should be dirty, your hair messy, and your eyes sparkling.” – Shanti

We got dirty and found beauty in unexpected places this month. This theme prompted us to go out and explore, find places that are broken down, get our hands dirty, and find treasures. Scroll through to see how we all found the beauty in dirt.

imperfection

imperfection is perfection to a beautiful perspective

This months theme was one we were all pretty excited about! In photography we are told to remember the rule of thirds, to get our images tack sharp, or not to chop limbs among many other rules. Sometimes we capture an image that evokes a feeling or is visually beautiful but one of those elements are off and that can deter us from sharing it anyway.  We as people are always striving for perfection, but when we let go and embrace the inevitable imperfections, the results are beautiful.

Carefree

“All good things are wild and free” – Henry David Thoreau

School is out and summer break is upon (most of) us. This is the time to take advantage of all of the sunshine, late sunsets resulting in even later bedtimes, trips to the beaches and forests, and straight up chilling in the backyard.

We spent this month documenting ourselves and our children living life freely. We went on adventures and stayed home. We shot quiet moments and wild ones too. We relaxed and let go of responsibilities and the results were beautiful.

Embrace the Moment

“If I dismiss the ordinary – waiting for the special, the extreme, the extraordinary to happen – I may just miss my life” – Dani Shapiro

This quote fits this months theme in a way that is very poignant. So often we wait for the next best thing in our lives. We look forward to vacations, we can’t wait for work to be over, or school to be done. We can’t wait for the weekends, or to go to bed at night. So much time is wished away. Dismissing the ordinary is something that can happen with photography too, only taking pictures during monumental events or celebrations. Only taking pictures during the golden hour, or at a beautiful location. What about during our everyday? That matters too, it might even matter more. Our everyday lives and everyday moments are what tell the real story of our lives.

I have been seeing a lot of talk about mindfulness and being present, something I admit I am guilty of not doing as much in my life as I wish. When this theme was suggested it was pretty unanimous that we all felt we needed this push to embrace the moment a bit more in our own lives. What I didn’t realize at the time was that one of our contributors, Sonja Stich, was about to launch a workshop through Beyond the Wanderlust that among many things, speaks to the concept of being mindful. I found Dani Shapiro’s quote in the pages of Sonja’s workshop and felt it deserved a place here as well.

If you are interested in learning more about what Sonja has to say, go check out her workshop, Capture the Energy of Life: Connecting with Your Intuition and Emotions, here.

And now onto each of our interpretations of this month’s theme.

“If you keep me safe, I’ll keep you wild”

This theme was chosen to celebrate this season we are all in called motherhood and also because we all draw inspiration from our children. Sometimes we get caught up in the responsibilities of life but watching a child fearlessly get lost in their world of adventure and imagination reminds us to find that bit of wild in our souls. As mothers and parents we promise to keep them safe at all times, from physical and emotional harm. In turn our reward is being able to witness the raw beauty of childhood and, if we allow it, finding that wild within ourselves too.
